Background

WTVD signed on September 2, 1954, as the first commercial TV station in the Raleigh-Durham market, launched by Durham Broadcasting Enterprises. In 1957, it was acquired by Capital Cities Television, which grew into one of the largest broadcast groups in the country. Capital Cities purchased the ABC network itself in 1985, and the following year WTVD formally became an ABC-affiliated owned-and-operated station after a affiliation swap with local competitor WRAL-TV. Disney acquired Capital Cities/ABC in 1995 for roughly $19 billion, making WTVD part of the Disney portfolio, where it has remained ever since. The station covers a 23-county region of North Carolina and Virginia, producing more than 50 hours of local news per week.
