Background

The Advocate began in September 1967 as a local Los Angeles newsletter run by the activist group PRIDE (Personal Rights in Defense and Education). It was a response to a police raid on the Black Cat Tavern. It was renamed The Advocate in 1969 and distributed nationally. It later passed through several owners, including Liberation Publications and Here Media, which moved it from biweekly to monthly publication in 2008. In 2017 Here Media sold its magazine operations to a group led by Oreva Capital, which formed Pride Media. In June 2022 Pride Media was bought by Equal Entertainment LLC and became Equalpride. Equalpride acquired Condé Nast's Them in February 2026, a week after layoffs at its other titles. The Advocate has long combined news reporting with advocacy and opinion, and its audience is LGBTQ+ readers. Its recent coverage of the second Trump administration emphasizes rollbacks of LGBTQ+ protections, such as Title IX changes, foster-youth rules, and the end of an LGBTQ+ veterans' care network.
