The Africa Report
Paris-based, pan-African, center-left
Background
The Africa Report was launched in 2004 as an English-language complement to Jeune Afrique, the flagship French-language magazine that Béchir Ben Yahmed had founded in 1960. Ben Yahmed, a Tunisian-French journalist, built Jeune Afrique Media Group into the leading pan-African media house, and The Africa Report was intended to reach English-speaking African audiences and international readers. The publication has been headquartered in Paris and targets senior executives, policymakers, and observers focused on the African continent. It introduced a digital paywall in 2021 to complement its quarterly print edition, reflecting a broader shift toward subscription revenue. Media Bias/Fact Check rates it Left-Center in bias and Mostly Factual in accuracy, noting its emphasis on governance failures, accountability, and social justice framing. The outlet has no record of state funding; it is a commercial media operation. Since January 2025, The Africa Report has reported critically on the Trump administration's Africa policies, including the expiration of AGOA trade preferences, broad tariff increases affecting African economies, the mass recall of U.S. ambassadors from more than a dozen African nations, and diplomatic tensions with South Africa and Nigeria over contested claims by the White House.
