Background

Al Jazeera launched on November 1, 1996, funded by a Qatari government grant of roughly $137 million after the BBC Arabic television service shut down. It quickly distinguished itself in the Arab world by covering stories that state broadcasters in the region ignored, including criticism of Arab governments. After the September 11, 2001 attacks, it drew sustained Western criticism for airing messages from al-Qaeda leadership and was accused of anti-American bias. Al Jazeera English launched in 2006, aiming at a global audience, and Al Jazeera America followed in 2013 before closing in 2016 due to low ratings and financial losses. The network has faced recurring charges of reflecting Qatari foreign-policy interests — most sharply during the 2017–2021 Gulf diplomatic crisis, when Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt demanded its closure as a condition of restoring ties with Qatar. Its Opinion section publishes a wide range of outside contributors but is consistently rated left-of-center by media-bias analysts and has drawn specific criticism for pieces perceived as favorable to Hamas and hostile to Israel. Despite claiming editorial independence, Al Jazeera's governance structure keeps decisive authority with Qatar's ruling institutions, making full independence from state influence structurally difficult to verify.
