Background

The Arms Control Association was founded in 1971 as a project of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, during the SALT I negotiations, and became an independent organization in 1972. Its flagship publication, Arms Control Today, launched in 1974 and has since served as a primary reference for policymakers, journalists, and researchers on weapons treaties and proliferation issues. The organization was founded by former senior military, diplomatic, and defense officials who participated in early U.S.-Soviet arms negotiations. It became a prominent critic of the George W. Bush administration's 2001 withdrawal from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and its push for new nuclear capabilities. Media Bias/Fact Check rates it left-center with a high factual accuracy record. The ACA's editorial line consistently favors multilateral arms control agreements, bilateral nuclear reductions, and strict nonproliferation norms. During the Trump administration's second term (2025–present), ACA has published articles and statements criticizing moves toward nuclear testing resumption, the lapse of New START, and what it calls a 'chaotic and reckless' Iran nuclear policy, using pointed language that reflects its advocacy orientation.
