Background

Axios was founded in January 2017 by former Politico journalists Jim VandeHei, Mike Allen, and Roy Schwartz, built around a concise writing format they call 'Smart Brevity.' The company grew quickly into a nationally influential political and business news outlet. In August 2022, Cox Enterprises — a large, Atlanta-based private media and communications conglomerate — acquired Axios for $525 million, taking roughly a 70% stake while founders and staff retained the rest. Axios then launched Axios Local, a network of city-specific daily newsletters, expanding to dozens of U.S. cities including Raleigh, which covers the broader Triangle area (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill). In January 2025, Axios announced a partnership with OpenAI under which OpenAI funds new Axios Local newsrooms; a second round was announced in January 2026, supporting seven to nine additional cities. The Axios Local model is primarily advertising-supported, with a growing paid membership component. Independent bias analysts — including AllSides, Ad Fontes Media, and Media Bias/Fact Check — rate Axios nationally as center to lean-left, pointing to story selection on topics like immigration and climate, while acknowledging strong factual accuracy. Locally, Axios Raleigh focuses on city development, politics, business, and community news in the Triangle, providing a regional edition of Axios's nationally uniform format and editorial sensibility.
