Benzinga
U.S. center / financial news
Background
Benzinga was founded in 2010 by Jason Raznick, a University of Michigan business graduate who started the company out of a Detroit-area basement with roughly $3,000 in savings during the aftermath of the Great Recession. The company received an early $1.5 million seed investment from Chicago venture capital firm Lightbank in 2011, which helped it scale its newsroom and technology. Benzinga built its audience by embedding real-time financial news and market data into major online brokerages — including Fidelity, TD Ameritrade, Robinhood, and JPMorgan — reaching an estimated 25 million monthly readers. In October 2021, Toronto- and New York-based private equity firm Beringer Capital acquired a majority stake in a deal valued at approximately $300 million, financed in part by Royal Bank of Canada; Raznick retained a significant stake and remained involved in leadership. Benzinga's editorial focus is on equities, options, cryptocurrency, and macroeconomic news; it does not have a strong political identity and is consistently rated center or least-biased by third-party media monitors including Media Bias/Fact Check and Ad Fontes Media. Its revenue model has evolved to include a premium subscription terminal (Benzinga Pro), advertising, and an expanding AI data-licensing business. No significant editorial controversies or major fact-check failures have been widely documented.
