Bloomberg / Bloomberg Law
U.S. center to center-left
Background
Bloomberg L.P. was founded in 1981 by Michael Bloomberg using capital from his Salomon Brothers partnership payout, initially supplying real-time financial data to Wall Street traders through what became the Bloomberg Terminal. Bloomberg News was established in 1990 with Matthew Winkler as its first editor-in-chief, and grew into one of the largest financial-news operations in the world, eventually employing more than 2,700 journalists in over 120 bureaus. In 2009, Bloomberg launched Bloomberg Law, a subscription-based legal research and news platform; its 2011 acquisition of the Bureau of National Affairs for $990 million significantly expanded its legal and regulatory coverage. A major editorial controversy emerged in 2012, when Bloomberg reportedly suppressed follow-up investigative reporting on Chinese political elites' finances after Beijing blocked its websites and slowed Bloomberg Terminal approvals in China — accusations that drew wide criticism and led to the resignation of its China editor. A second conflict arose in 2019, when owner Michael Bloomberg entered the Democratic presidential race; Bloomberg News announced it would not investigate Bloomberg or his primary rivals, a policy condemned across the industry as a significant compromise of editorial independence. Media bias trackers generally place Bloomberg News in the center to center-left range, and the outlet's own editors have acknowledged that its opinion section reflects the views of its owner.
