Background

Bloomberg L.P. was founded in 1981 when Michael Bloomberg, after leaving Salomon Brothers, teamed with colleagues to build a financial data terminal business. In 1990, the company launched Bloomberg Business News as a wire service, with journalist Matthew Winkler as editor-in-chief; Winkler led the newsroom for 25 years, expanding it to more than 2,700 journalists in over 120 bureaus worldwide. The Bloomberg Terminal — a subscription data product sold to banks, hedge funds, and financial professionals — remains the company's dominant revenue source and has long influenced editorial priorities. The news division's most consequential controversy came in 2013, when senior editors spiked investigative stories on the wealth of Chinese Communist Party elites, reportedly to protect Terminal sales access in China; at least one editor resigned in protest. In 2019, Bloomberg publicly announced it would not investigate Michael Bloomberg or his Democratic rivals while he ran for the 2020 presidential nomination, drawing wide criticism for the conflict of interest. Michael Bloomberg retook the CEO role from 2014 to 2023, after which he appointed product executive Vlad Kliatchko as CEO and former Bank of England governor Mark Carney as non-executive chair. By 2025, Bloomberg Media reported 6 percent revenue growth and more than 700,000 digital subscribers. Media bias organizations including Media Bias/Fact Check and AllSides rate Bloomberg between center and center-left, with very high marks for factual accuracy.
