Background

Bloomberg LP was founded in 1981 by Michael Bloomberg and three colleagues after Bloomberg received a $10 million payout from Salomon Brothers; its core product, the Bloomberg Terminal, became the dominant financial data platform on Wall Street. Bloomberg Opinion launched in May 2011 under the name Bloomberg View, with an editorial board and staff columnists recruited from major outlets including the New York Times; it was later rebranded Bloomberg Opinion. David Shipley, a former op-ed editor at the New York Times, serves as executive editor of the opinion section. The section publishes views from its own editorial board as well as outside contributors on economics, finance, politics, and global affairs. AllSides rates Bloomberg as 'Lean Left,' while Media Bias/Fact Check rates it 'Left-Center,' both reflecting a moderate liberal orientation with a market-friendly, technocratic emphasis. Media Bias/Fact Check downgraded Bloomberg's factual rating from 'High' to 'Mostly Factual' after Bloomberg News was criticized in 2020 for limiting coverage of Michael Bloomberg's own Democratic presidential primary campaign—a notable conflict-of-interest episode. In Trump's second term (beginning January 2025), Bloomberg Opinion's editorial board has published consistently critical assessments of the administration's tariff policies (calling them 'dangerous,' 'illegal,' and 'increasingly costly'), its climate and environmental rollbacks, and its economic unpredictability, making its overall posture toward the current administration broadly critical.
