Background

The Boston Globe was founded in 1872 by a group of Boston businessmen, including Eben Jordan of the Jordan Marsh department store chain. It nearly collapsed in its first year but was rescued and rebuilt by Charles H. Taylor, who purchased it in 1877 and shaped it into one of the most-read papers in the country by the 1880s. The Taylor family held the Globe for roughly a century before the New York Times Company acquired it in 1993 for approximately $1.1 billion. Under Times Company ownership, the Globe's Spotlight investigative team won a 2003 Pulitzer Prize for its landmark exposé of child sexual abuse and cover-ups within the Catholic Church — work later depicted in the 2015 film 'Spotlight.' The Times Company sold the Globe in 2013 to John W. Henry for just $70 million, a reflection of the wider collapse in newspaper valuations. Henry and his wife Linda Pizzuti Henry invested in modernizing the operation and pivoting it from an advertising-heavy model to reader subscriptions, making the Globe one of a small number of large regional papers that remained profitable heading into the mid-2020s. Editorially, the Globe has leaned Democratic since the mid-20th century, and legendary editor Tom Winship (1965–1984) pushed the paper further left; it has endorsed Democratic presidential nominees continuously for decades. The Globe has occasionally endorsed Republicans at the state and local level but its national editorial stance has remained consistently center-left.
