Background

The Herald was founded in 1876 by Scottish immigrant William Cathcart and was later bought by D.W. Lowe, an American. It became the main English-language daily in Argentina. Under editor Robert Cox in the 1970s it was known for reporting on disappearances during the military dictatorship, at a time when most local media stayed quiet. Ownership later passed to the Manigault family of the U.S., then in 2007 to Sergio Szpolski, and in 2015 to Grupo Indalo, owned by Cristóbal López and Fabián De Souza. In 2017 the daily print edition ended after about 140 years. Indalo, the majority owner, shifted the paper to a weekly format before it stopped publishing. The Herald came back as an online-only publication in March 2023. Its recent coverage has noted Trump's endorsement of Milei and U.S. financial support for Argentina, and has run analysis questioning Milei's popularity and what the U.S. backing means for Argentina. Because I could not review a wide sample of its output on the Trump administration itself, the stance rating rests on a limited set of recent headlines.
