Business Observer
U.S. center-right, pro-business
Background
The Business Observer traces its roots to the Gulf Coast Business Review, founded in 1997 to serve Sarasota and Manatee counties. In October 2001, it acquired the Tampa Bay Review, extending coverage to the Tampa-St. Petersburg area. By 2005 it had opened a Fort Myers bureau to cover Lee and Collier counties. In 2013, with a footprint spanning Polk to Collier counties, the paper rebranded as the Business Observer, aligning its name with parent company Observer Media Group. Observer Media Group itself was founded when Matt Walsh and his wife Lisa Walsh purchased the Longboat Observer in 1995 with family financing and a small group of investors. The group has grown to publish roughly ten Florida newspapers and six companion websites, remaining privately held and family-operated. Editorially, the outlet has a consistent free-market, laissez-faire orientation — Observer Media Group named 'laissez-faire' its Word of the Year for 2026 — and its coverage prioritizes practical business and economic information over political commentary. No major editorial controversies or corrections scandals have been widely reported.
