Capital Brief
Australian centrist, pro-market
Background
Capital Brief launched on August 15, 2023, as the first publication from Scire, an independent Australian media startup founded by Chris Janz and David Eisman, both former senior executives at Nine Entertainment's publishing division, the successor to Fairfax Media. Editor-in-Chief John McDuling previously served as national business editor of The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, flagship papers of that same publishing stable. The outlet is funded through subscriptions and venture investment from Shearwater Capital, and it explicitly avoids collecting personal data for advertising — a deliberate break from the dominant Australian media model. Capital Brief's stated editorial values are pro-market but not uncritically pro-business, politically neutral, climate-aware, and privacy-conscious. It publishes a flagship weekday newsletter called 'The Edition' at 4:30 p.m. AEST, with reporters based in Sydney, Melbourne, and Canberra. By late 2024 — about 16 months after launch — it had established itself as a niche player in Australia's competitive business media space, drawing comparisons to a younger-skewing version of The Australian Financial Review. Because its focus is squarely on the Australian market, its coverage of U.S. politics, including the Trump administration, is largely filtered through the impact on Australian trade, investment, and policy rather than reflecting a domestic U.S. political stance.
