Background

WNCN traces its roots to 1988, when channel 17 launched as WYED, an independent station operating out of Clayton, North Carolina. Outlet Communications purchased it in 1994, and in 1995 the station became the NBC affiliate for the Research Triangle market, adopting the WNCN call letters and standing up a local newsroom. NBC sold the station to Media General in 2006. In a significant local affiliation swap, WNCN switched from NBC to CBS on February 29, 2016, after the longtime CBS affiliate WRAL-TV agreed to carry NBC instead. Nexstar Broadcasting Group then acquired Media General for $4.6 billion; the deal closed January 17, 2017, folding WNCN into Nexstar's national portfolio. The station later rebranded from 'CBS North Carolina' to 'CBS 17.'
