CNN was founded by Ted Turner and Reese Schonfeld and launched June 1, 1980, in Atlanta as the world's first 24-hour all-news cable network. Turner aimed for fact-driven global reporting rather than explicit ideology, though the outlet developed a center-left reputation over subsequent decades. Turner Broadcasting was acquired by Time Warner in 1996; AT&T then bought Time Warner in 2018, placing CNN inside WarnerMedia. In 2022, AT&T spun off WarnerMedia, which merged with Discovery Inc. to form Warner Bros. Discovery — CNN's current parent. In June 2025, Warner Bros. Discovery announced a split into two publicly traded companies; CNN would land in the cable-network unit called Discovery Global, with the separation targeted for mid-2026. CNN founder Ted Turner died in May 2026 at age 87. Independent media-bias trackers AllSides and Media Bias/Fact Check consistently rate CNN's news content as center-left to lean-left. The outlet has faced sustained conflict with the Trump administration across both terms — including being denied Pentagon press office space in 2025 and facing FCC criticism over Iran ceasefire coverage in April 2026.
