Background

The Gazette traces its roots to 1872, when General William J. Palmer — the founder of Colorado Springs — launched a paper called Out West; it relaunched as The Colorado Springs Gazette on January 4, 1873. After several early ownership changes, the paper merged with the Colorado Springs Evening Telegraph in 1946 to form the Gazette-Telegraph, and that same year was purchased by Raymond C. Hoiles's Freedom Newspapers, a libertarian-leaning chain known for strongly anti-government editorial stances. Under Freedom's ownership the paper won Pulitzer Prizes in 1990 and 2014. In 2012, as Freedom Communications faced financial difficulties, Philip Anschutz's Clarity Media Group purchased the paper, retooled it for digital publishing, and moved it back to a downtown Colorado Springs location. Anschutz, a faith-driven conservative, has steadily expanded his media portfolio to include the Washington Examiner and the Denver Gazette (launched 2020). Since the acquisition, the Gazette's editorial board has maintained a consistently conservative posture — supporting Republican candidates, opposing abortion rights, and criticizing left-leaning Colorado state policies — while its straight news coverage draws on the Associated Press and is considered factually reliable. Media-bias trackers rate it right-center overall, though some press critics describe its editorial page as more stridently right-wing. Under the Trump administration's second term, the paper has editorialized in favor of several Trump policy positions while occasionally opposing specific federal decisions it views as damaging to Colorado's rural communities or military installations.
