Background

The Colorado Sun launched on September 10, 2018, founded by ten veteran journalists who left The Denver Post after the hedge fund Alden Global Capital acquired the paper and imposed deep layoffs. The founders initially incorporated as an LLC, then quickly restructured as a for-profit public benefit corporation. Early funding came from Civil, a blockchain-based journalism platform, a Kickstarter campaign that exceeded its goal, and a grant from Wend Ventures for education reporting. In May 2021, the Sun partnered with the National Trust for Local News to jointly acquire 24 suburban Front Range community newspapers from Colorado Community Media, an effort to preserve local coverage in smaller markets. When the Sun began converting to full nonprofit status in 2023, it donated its ownership stake in those papers to the Trust. On November 15, 2023, the organization became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a worker-cooperative governance structure, making its staff the controlling members. Media Bias/Fact Check rates it Left-Center with high factual reliability; AllSides rates it Lean Left with low confidence. The outlet covers Colorado politics, environment, health, and economy, and its reporting on the Trump administration's second term has highlighted what it presents as harmful effects of immigration enforcement and tariffs on the state.
