The Daily Beast
U.S. left-leaning
Background
The Daily Beast launched on October 6, 2008, founded by British journalist Tina Brown — a former editor of Vanity Fair and The New Yorker — with financial backing from IAC and its chairman Barry Diller, taking its name from a fictional tabloid in Evelyn Waugh's novel Scoop. It was conceived as a blend of breaking news, aggregated links, and original reporting with a lively, sometimes tabloid-inflected voice. John Avlon served as editor-in-chief from 2013 to 2018, articulating an editorial mission he described as 'non-partisan but not neutral' — willing to criticize both sides but without claiming false equivalence. Despite that self-description, independent analysts consistently rate the publication as left-leaning, citing its story selection, headline framing, and the orientation of its opinion and investigative work. In April 2024, IAC entered a strategic partnership with Ben Sherwood (former president of Disney ABC Television Group) and Joanna Coles (former chief content officer of Hearst Magazines), who received a roughly 49% equity stake and took over as CEO/publisher and chief creative officer respectively. Under their leadership the outlet pivoted toward subscriptions as a primary growth engine and achieved its first-ever full-year profit in 2025. Coverage of Donald Trump's second term has continued the outlet's pattern of critical scrutiny, including reporting framed around low approval ratings, insider accounts of White House dysfunction, and analysis skeptical of the administration's political durability.
