Background

DCReport was co-founded around 2016–2017 by David Cay Johnston, a Pulitzer Prize winner for national reporting at The New York Times. David Crook, a former Wall Street Journal editor, was also a co-founder, and Adam Leipzig is also credited with helping create the site. It first drew wide attention in March 2017, when it published pages of Donald Trump's 2005 federal tax return, which it said it had received anonymously. In late 2022 the outlet announced a new chapter as a nonprofit organization supported by donations. Its content focuses on investigative reporting and commentary about politics, taxes, the economy and corporate and government accountability. Johnston has long covered Trump and wrote a critical book about him, so the outlet's perspective on Trump is openly adversarial. In 2026 it has published pieces on Trump's links to the Epstein files, Iran negotiations, Pentagon leadership moves, and a reported IRS settlement involving Trump, which Johnston described in strongly critical terms in a May 2026 Democracy Now interview. Media-bias raters generally place it on the left, with reporting that is often fact-based but written from a clear point of view.
