Background

Deadline Hollywood was launched in March 2006 by veteran entertainment journalist Nikki Finke as a blog called Deadline Hollywood Daily, an outgrowth of her weekly column in the LA Weekly. Finke's aggressive, insider-driven breaking-news approach quickly made it one of the most-read sites in the entertainment industry. In 2009, Jay Penske's Mail.com Media Corporation (later renamed Penske Media Corporation) acquired the site for a reported low-seven-figure sum, and the URL was shortened to deadline.com. Finke retained full editorial control under contract but departed in November 2013 after a prolonged dispute with Penske, who had also acquired rival trade Variety. Under subsequent editors, Deadline expanded its staff and coverage while maintaining its focus on box office, studio deals, TV ratings, and awards. In 2014, Saudi Research and Media Group took a significant minority stake in PMC, providing capital that helped the company acquire additional brands including The Hollywood Reporter and Billboard. PMC has continued consolidating entertainment media, and as of 2026 Deadline operates as part of a large portfolio of trade and lifestyle publications. Bias-rating organizations including Media Bias/Fact Check, Ad Fontes Media, and AllSides consistently rate Deadline as center-left to lean-left, noting high factual accuracy but language that skews critical when covering conservative political figures.
