Defense Visual Information Distribution Service
U.S. federal government / military official
Background
DVIDS was launched in 2005 under its original name, the Defense Video & Imagery Distribution System, to centralize and streamline the release of military-produced multimedia to civilian press outlets. It was brought under the newly established Defense Media Activity (DMA) when DMA was formally stood up on January 1, 2008, following a Base Realignment and Closure process that consolidated disparate Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps media operations. DMA's chartering directive was published in December 2007. DVIDS operates 24/7, using portable Ku-band satellite uplinks and IP connections deployed in theater to distribute broadcast-quality video, still images, audio, and print products from service members and commanders around the world. In 2014 it launched DefenseTV, a military streaming channel available on Roku, Chromecast, and Fire TV. The service was renamed to its current form, the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service, to reflect a broader content mandate beyond video and imagery. In May 2026, the Trump administration renamed DMA to the War Media Activity as part of a broader effort to rebrand the Department of Defense as the Department of War; DVIDS continues to operate as a service under that parent organization. Because content is produced entirely by military public affairs personnel and reflects official messaging, DVIDS functions as an institutional mouthpiece for the DoD and the sitting administration rather than as an independent journalistic outlet.
