Background

Democracy Now! launched on February 19, 1996, as a daily election-coverage program on Pacifica Radio station WBAI in New York City, co-founded by journalists Amy Goodman, Juan González, Larry Bensky, Salim Muwakkil, and Julie Drizin. It was conceived as an alternative to what its founders saw as a corporate-dependent mainstream press, and it gradually expanded into a daily hour-long newscast covering stories — anti-war activism, labor, civil rights, Indigenous rights, and U.S. foreign policy — that its founders felt were underreported elsewhere. The program separated from Pacifica and became independently produced under the nonprofit Democracy Now! Productions, eventually broadcasting on more than 1,400 radio and television stations worldwide as well as online. Its editorial record is strongly progressive: multiple independent media-bias rating organizations (Media Bias/Fact Check, AllSides, Ad Fontes Media) consistently place it on the left or left-adjacent end of the U.S. media spectrum. A notable episode in its history occurred in 2016 when host Amy Goodman was arrested while covering protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline. In 2025–2026, Democracy Now! has continued its pattern of critical, advocacy-inflected reporting on immigration enforcement, rollbacks to federal science funding, and U.S. foreign policy under the Trump administration's second term. The outlet marked its 30th anniversary in March 2026 with a public event at Riverside Church in New York City.
