Background

The Diplomat was founded in 2001 by Minh Bui Jones, David Llewellyn-Smith, and Sung Lee as an Australian bi-monthly print magazine, with its first edition appearing in April 2002; the original aim was to provide foreign-affairs coverage for Australian audiences. In December 2007, James Pach acquired the outlet through his company Trans-Asia Inc.—later reorganized as MHT Corporation, a Tokyo-based information-services firm he had founded in 1994 after moving to Japan from Perth, Australia. Sustained losses in the print edition led to a full transition to digital publishing in August 2009, with the Sydney office closed and operations shifted to Tokyo. Over time, the editorial focus broadened from Australia to the wider Asia-Pacific and eventually the Indo-Pacific region, encompassing geopolitics, economics, security, and society. By 2020 the site was drawing roughly two million unique monthly visitors. Media Bias/Fact Check rates it 'Least Biased' with high factual reliability, reflecting its analytical and foreign-policy-specialist orientation rather than a domestic partisan agenda. Coverage of the second Trump term has focused critically on tariff escalation against Asian allies such as Japan and South Korea, the 2026 National Defense Strategy's ambiguous treatment of Taiwan, and a perceived shift toward transactional diplomacy that The Diplomat's contributors have generally portrayed as destabilizing to existing regional alliances.
