Drug Topics
U.S. pharmacy industry trade
Background
Drug Topics traces its roots to 1883, when it was published as a trade organ of drug wholesaler McKesson & Robbins; the publication's current stated founding date of 1857 reflects the 1940 absorption of the older Druggist Circular. By the 1930s, Topics Publishing Company held the title, and by 1974 Medical Economics Company (based in Oradell, New Jersey) was the publisher. The magazine transitioned through several ownership changes over the following decades before landing under the umbrella of MJH Life Sciences, a Cranbury, New Jersey–based medical media company founded by the Hennessy family in 1998. In November 2021, MJH Life Sciences sold a majority interest to private equity firm BDT Capital Partners while the Hennessy family retained a minority ownership position. Throughout its history, Drug Topics has served as a practical reference for pharmacists, covering drug interactions, pharmacy law, reimbursement policy, and retail business issues — not general-interest health news. The publication has no notable political controversies; its editorial focus is the business and clinical environment of pharmacy practice, and it covers federal drug policy (including Trump-era initiatives like TrumpRx and Most-Favored-Nation pricing) primarily through the lens of how those policies affect pharmacists and their patients.
