Background
E&E News was founded in 1998 in Washington, D.C., by Kevin Braun and Michael Witt as a news-clipping service for Capitol Hill staffers. It became a web-based publication in 2000 and expanded by acquiring the Greenwire newsletter from National Journal that same year. Over two decades it grew into a suite of five specialized products—Climatewire, E&E Daily, Energywire, Greenwire, and E&E News PM—targeting institutional readers in the energy, environment, and policy world. Politico acquired E&E News in December 2020, and Politico itself was bought by German media giant Axel Springer for over $1 billion in October 2021, making Axel Springer the ultimate owner. Media watchdog Media Bias/Fact Check rated E&E News as left-center biased but high in factual accuracy, reflecting its science-accepting framing of climate policy. During the Trump administration's second term, E&E News covered regulatory rollbacks and the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement in consistently critical terms; in February 2025, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin canceled the agency's $458,919 annual subscription, publicly calling it the 'best $458,919 we ever saved' and dismissing the outlet's work as 'poor journalism.' The loss of government institutional subscriptions contributed to financial pressure on the brand, and in June 2026 Politico announced it was sunsetting E&E News as a standalone outlet, planning to relaunch energy coverage under new Politico-branded newsletters starting in September 2026.
