Background

EdNC launched in 2015 as a nonprofit online newsroom. Gerry Hancock and Ferrel Guillory, both with ties to North Carolina education and policy circles, are credited as founders, and Mebane Rash has run it as founding CEO and editor-in-chief. It covers North Carolina's public schools and 58 community colleges, plus higher education and early childhood. Its stated aim is to inform education policy and improve outcomes, which makes it closer to a solutions-oriented, pro-public-education outlet than a traditional adversarial newsroom. Its funder list includes major North Carolina foundations and corporate sponsors, and it publishes annual supporter lists. Critics could argue that this mix of foundation backing and a policy-improvement mission shapes its framing toward the education establishment, although I found no specific controversies. Its recent coverage of Trump-administration actions, such as federal funding, Education Department changes and immigration, is mostly framed around impacts on North Carolina schools, with little overt partisan commentary. I did not review a full sample of its 2026 federal-policy coverage, so this assessment is provisional.
