Background

Rick Hasen co-founded an Election Law Listserv with UCLA professor Daniel Lowenstein in 1995, establishing himself early as a central hub for election law discussion among academics. In 2003, while teaching at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, he launched the Election Law Blog to provide news, analysis, and his own commentary on voting rights, redistricting, campaign finance, and election administration. The blog grew through Hasen's moves to UC Irvine School of Law (2011) and then UCLA School of Law (2022), where it is now affiliated with his Safeguarding Democracy Project. UCI Law funded a full redesign of the site in 2021, giving it more institutional infrastructure while it remained Hasen's personal editorial platform. The ABA Journal inducted it into its 'Blawg 100 Hall of Fame' in 2015, and the Library of Congress has archived it as a significant legal resource. Hasen has also co-founded the peer-reviewed Election Law Journal and written widely cited books on election law, disinformation, and the integrity of elections. His editorial perspective consistently supports expansive voting access, opposes voter ID requirements, and is critical of what he characterizes as partisan efforts — primarily by Republicans — to manipulate election rules; since January 2025 that has translated into sustained critical coverage of the Trump administration's push to reshape federal and state election procedures before the 2026 midterms.
