The Federalist
U.S. right (conservative, pro-Trump)
Background
Ben Domenech and Sean Davis co-founded The Federalist, and it launched in September 2013. It publishes news, commentary, culture and religion writing, and it also has podcasts and newsletters. Early on it was known for a right-leaning, often combative style that mixed social conservatism with skepticism of establishment Republicans. It became more strongly pro-Trump over time, and in recent years it has been a prominent outlet for the populist right. The parent company, FDRLST Media, is private and not required to disclose its funding. Critics and watchdog groups have asked who pays for the site, since advertising alone seems unlikely to cover its staff. Reports point to donors such as Dick Uihlein and to underwriting from the Conservative Partnership Institute, a group that incubates Trump-aligned strategy. Media-bias raters such as Media Bias/Fact Check and AllSides rate it as right-leaning, and it has faced criticism over inaccurate or inflammatory pieces. Ben Domenech has his own controversy: he resigned from a Washington Post blog in 2006 over plagiarism allegations. In 2026 the site has run opinion pieces backing Trump's policies and exclusive stories sourced to the administration. One example is a September 2026 piece on a Trump administration plan to protect election infrastructure before the midterms.
