Background

Foreign Policy was founded in late 1970 by Harvard political scientist Samuel P. Huntington and Warren Demian Manshel as a venue for alternative thinking on U.S. foreign policy during the Vietnam War era, with a self-described liberal internationalist orientation. In 1978, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace acquired full ownership and published the magazine for 30 years. During that period, it evolved from a slim academic quarterly into a bimonthly glossy covering the intersection of globalization and international affairs, a transition formalized around 2000. In 2008, The Washington Post Company (now Graham Holdings) purchased Foreign Policy from Carnegie. By 2012, the outlet had expanded into The FP Group, adding FP Events and a growing digital presence. Media-bias analysts at AllSides rate it 'Center,' while Ad Fontes Media places it in the 'Middle' of the bias spectrum and scores it as reliable analysis and fact reporting. The magazine's Winter 2025 issue featured a critical Trump-focused cover themed 'Trump World,' and its Summer 2026 issue examined the erosion of key pillars of the post-WWII international order. Throughout the second Trump term, its coverage has consistently questioned the 'America First' approach to trade, alliances, and multilateral institutions.
