Foundation for Defense of Democracies

U.S. right (neoconservative, hawkish foreign policy)

The Foundation for Defense of Democracies is a Washington, D.C.-based hawkish think tank, not a traditional news outlet, funded mainly by conservative and pro-Israel philanthropists. It advocates confrontational U.S. policies toward Iran, China, and Russia and has long influenced congressional and executive-branch decision-making on sanctions and national security. Its relationship with the second Trump administration is mixed: FDD broadly supports the administration's hardline posture toward adversaries and has actively lobbied on Iran sanctions, but publicly criticized elements of Trump's 2025–2026 Iran nuclear diplomacy as too lenient.

Owned byIndependent 501(c)(3) nonprofit; no single owner. Founded by Clifford D. May, who remains president, with a board of directors. Not a news outlet — a policy research institute that produces analysis, commentary, and congressional testimony.
