WHNS holds channel 21 in Greenville, SC. Its license dates to 1953, and the station first went on the air on April 1, 1984, as a general-market independent. The call letters stand for "Harry 'n Stella," for Harry and Stella Pappas, the original owners. It ran as an independent until about 1988, when it became a Fox affiliate. It later passed through several broadcast-group owners and is now owned by Gray Media; I could not confirm the full ownership chain from the sources I reached. The station brands itself "FOX Carolina News," and its website runs a regional news operation. Gray also runs related local ventures, such as Palmetto Sports & Entertainment, and in 2026 announced Charlotte Hornets games on WHNS subchannels. In 2026 Gray and DISH reached a deal restoring Gray stations, including Fox Carolina, to DISH after a carriage dispute. Being a Fox network affiliate does not mean it shares the editorial line of Fox News Channel; local newscasts are produced separately.
