Background

Fox News was launched in October 1996 by media mogul Rupert Murdoch, who hired veteran political media consultant Roger Ailes to build and lead the channel. Under Ailes, the network grew into the highest-rated cable news channel in the United States, with its primetime opinion block becoming a major driver of conservative political discourse. Though the network adopted the slogan 'Fair and Balanced,' independent researchers and media critics consistently identified strong pro-Republican leanings in its opinion programming. In 2016, Ailes resigned amid multiple sexual harassment allegations from female employees; top-rated host Bill O'Reilly was similarly dismissed in 2017 after harassment settlements became public. Tucker Carlson, whose 8 p.m. show was the most-watched in cable news, was abruptly fired in April 2023 and replaced by Jesse Watters. That same month, Fox agreed to pay Dominion Voting Systems $787.5 million—the largest known U.S. media defamation settlement—after a Delaware court found Fox had broadcast false claims about Dominion's role in the 2020 election; Fox did not formally admit wrongdoing or apologize. In 2025, a family trust settlement gave Lachlan Murdoch sole voting control of Fox Corporation, consolidating his authority over the network. Fox News opinion programming has consistently championed the Trump agenda during both of his presidential terms, and its second-term coverage has continued that pattern.
