FOX Television Stations
U.S. right-leaning
Background
Fox Television Stations was founded in 1986 when Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation acquired six major-market independent TV stations from Metromedia, providing the owned-and-operated station base for the launch of the Fox Broadcasting Company. Over the following decades, Murdoch expanded the group to cover most of the top U.S. television markets. The stations remained part of 21st Century Fox until March 2019, when Fox Corporation was spun off as a separate public company after Disney acquired the bulk of 21st Century Fox's entertainment assets. Fox Corporation — retaining Fox News, Fox Sports, the Fox broadcast network, and the local stations — remained under Murdoch family control via a dual-class share structure. The local stations collectively produce more than 1,350 hours of local news per week and reach roughly 37% of U.S. television households, making them a significant vehicle for carrying Fox's brand and perspective into local markets. Critics and media researchers have noted that Fox-owned local stations can amplify right-leaning talking points even among viewers who do not watch the national Fox News cable channel. The stations have been financially important to Fox Corporation, generating record political advertising revenue during election cycles, including more than $400 million in political ad revenue in the first half of fiscal year 2025. While local Fox affiliates are not identical editorially to the Fox News cable network, they operate within the same corporate and ownership structure and have generally maintained a conservative-leaning orientation in their news coverage.
