Background

Fox Weather launched on October 25, 2021, after Fox News Media announced the service in December 2020 as a free, ad-supported streaming weather outlet intended to compete directly with The Weather Channel. It was built on the meteorological staff and infrastructure of Fox's owned-and-operated local television stations. At launch, media watchdogs and environmental journalists raised pointed questions about whether the channel — given Fox News's long, well-documented record of climate-change skepticism — would fairly cover climate-driven extreme weather; early coverage largely avoided drawing explicit links between warming and specific events. Fox Corporation positioned Fox Weather as editorially independent from its opinion programming and hired meteorologists with mainstream scientific credentials. By 2024, the outlet's reporters were producing more stories directly connecting extreme weather to climate trends. In February 2025, Fox Weather added a paid, ad-free subscription tier and was integrated into Fox One, Fox Corporation's bundled streaming service. A September 2025 settlement of a Murdoch family trust dispute gave Lachlan Murdoch undisputed sole voting control of Fox Corporation, cementing the corporate structure under which Fox Weather operates. Fox Weather does not carry political talk programming or opinion hosts, distinguishing it editorially from Fox News, though it shares the same parent company, branding, and corporate priorities.
