Background

France 24 launched on December 6, 2006, after President Jacques Chirac backed the project as France's answer to CNN and the BBC — a vehicle for presenting a French perspective on world affairs. At launch it was structured as a joint venture between the private broadcaster TF1 and the public broadcaster France Télévisions, but by 2008 the French state had bought out both minority partners and assumed full ownership through the holding company now called France Médias Monde. The channel broadcasts around the clock in French, English, Arabic, and Spanish, reaching an estimated 533 million households worldwide. Its stated mission is to offer France's viewpoint on global events and strengthen France's cultural and diplomatic presence internationally. Funding comes overwhelmingly from parliamentary budget allocations, with a minority share from advertising; the France Médias Monde group runs on roughly €300 million per year. Independent media-bias trackers, including Media Bias/Fact Check and Biasly, rate France 24 as generally factually reliable and place it near the center with a slight left tilt. Because the outlet's editorial outlook aligns closely with mainstream French foreign-policy positions — including support for multilateralism, European integration, and a rules-based international order — its coverage has been consistently skeptical of the nationalist and unilateralist policies of the Trump administration's second term.
