Background
Free Republic (freerepublic.com) was launched in September 1996 and opened to the public in February 1997 by Jim Robinson, a former U.S. Navy veteran and computer programmer from Fresno, California, who operated it as a sole proprietorship with help from family and a small group of paid moderators. The site rose to national prominence during the Clinton impeachment era in the late 1990s as one of the first online hubs for coordinated conservative grassroots activism. In 2000, major newspapers including the Los Angeles Times and Washington Post successfully sued Free Republic for copyright infringement after users routinely reposted full article texts; the courts rejected the site's fair-use defense. The forum gained further notoriety in 2004 when its users helped expose apparent forgeries in a CBS News story about President George W. Bush's military record — an episode dubbed "Rathergate." Free Republic is rated "Right" with "Mixed" factual reporting by Media Bias/Fact Check, reflecting its strongly conservative story selection and a community that sometimes amplifies unverified claims. The site is not a traditional newsroom but a moderated discussion board where registered members, known as "Freepers," post links and commentary. Founder Jim Robinson died on October 27, 2025, at age 79; the site has continued operating under family management, maintaining the same donation-based model and conservative orientation.
