Background

Game Developer began in 1997 as Gamasutra, the website of Game Developer magazine, which was published by Miller Freeman, later CMP Media and then UBM. The site was renamed Game Developer in 2021. It was folded into the GDC family of brands, which Informa acquired when it bought UBM in 2018. Informa Tech's digital media businesses were then merged with TechTarget in December 2024 to form Informa TechTarget, which now owns the outlet. The site publishes news, business analysis, postmortems and technical articles written by developers. It also runs the annual GDC industry survey, "State of the Game Industry". Its audience is developers, so it often covers layoffs, unionization, working conditions and platform policy with a sympathetic view of workers. Editorial controversies have been mostly about staffing: Informa cut staff at its game properties in recent years, and the site's earlier Gamasutra era included disputes over blog content. Its coverage of the second Trump administration has centered on tariffs and console pricing, including the Supreme Court's ruling against the tariffs, and on survey data about tariff impacts. It has largely avoided broader partisan commentary and reports on politics only as it affects the game business.
