Background

Jim Hoft founded The Gateway Pundit in 2004 as a personal blog in St. Louis, Missouri, and it grew into a multi-staff operation over the following decade. The site built a large audience by publishing politically charged, right-leaning content, and gained enough prominence to receive White House press credentials during Trump's first term. Over the years, fact-checkers and researchers have documented a pattern of the site publishing false stories, conspiracy theories, and hoaxes — on topics ranging from the 2018 Parkland school shooting to the 2020 presidential election. In November 2019, the Wikipedia community deprecated it as an unreliable source. In September 2021, Google removed the site from its ad program for repeatedly publishing misinformation, a significant blow to its revenue. Two Georgia election workers, Ruby Freeman and Wandrea' ArShaye Moss, sued the outlet in 2021 for defamation related to false 2020 election claims; TGP Communications filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April 2024 in an apparent effort to delay those lawsuits, but a federal judge dismissed the filing in July 2024 as bad faith. The parties settled in October 2024, after which nearly 70 articles were removed from the site. The outlet continues to publish and remains closely aligned with the MAGA political movement and the Trump administration's second term.
