Background

Hoodline traces its roots to Haighteration, a San Francisco neighborhood blog started in 2010 by Andrew Dudley covering the Haight-Ashbury district. Several similar SF neighborhood blogs were consolidated under the Hoodline brand in 2013–2014, with tech-media veteran Eric Eldon (formerly co-editor of TechCrunch) joining as co-founder and editor-in-chief. The company raised roughly $15.6 million in venture capital by 2018, pitching itself as a 'hyperlocal automated data newswire.' In 2016 it was acquired by Pixel Labs (also known as Ripple), a VC-backed content aggregator, and in 2019 it was acquired again by the neighborhood social network Nextdoor, which used Hoodline content within its platform. In October 2020, Nextdoor sold Hoodline to Impress3 Media, a small Bay Area local-news company run by Zachary Chen that also owns SFist; under Impress3, Hoodline expanded its AI-driven model to cover dozens of U.S. cities. In mid-2024, CNN Business and Nieman Lab reported that Hoodline had been publishing AI-written articles under fictitious human bylines, complete with AI-generated headshots and fake biographical profiles — designed to mimic a racially diverse human staff — and that it only added small 'AI' disclosure labels after being publicly called out by a competing outlet. In October 2024, Techdirt reported that an AI-generated Hoodline article falsely accused a San Mateo County district attorney of murder, illustrating the risks of its low-oversight AI publishing model.
