Background

IBTimes UK is the British arm of International Business Times, a digital news operation co-founded in 2006 by Etienne Uzac and Johnathan Davis, both associates of South Korean religious figure David Jang. Uzac conceived the outlet while studying at the London School of Economics, aiming to offer broader international business coverage than U.S.- or Europe-centered publications. IBT Media acquired Newsweek from IAC in 2013, significantly raising its profile, before spinning Newsweek off as a separate company in 2018. In 2018, Manhattan prosecutors indicted Uzac on fraud charges; he and Davis both pleaded guilty in 2020 to a $35 million bank fraud scheme that used falsely inflated financial statements to secure loans, with funds flowing between IBT and Olivet University — a school also tied to Jang. Multiple journalistic investigations alleged that Jang directed IBT management decisions without holding an official title; Newsweek later sued IBT Media and Jang for mismanagement and misappropriation. IBT US formally absorbed IBT UK's web operations in 2019, though ibtimes.co.uk has continued to publish under IBT Media Ltd as an active UK-focused digital outlet relying on advertising revenue. Third-party media assessors, including Media Bias/Fact Check and AllSides, rate the outlet as left-center in editorial orientation with generally high factual accuracy.
