Background

Inside Climate News was co-founded in 2007 by publisher David Sassoon and executive editor Stacy Feldman, initially operating under the name SolveClimate News; it later rebranded partly to distance itself from the perception that it was an advocacy organization. It is organized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit called Lost Light Projects Inc., funded by grants from major foundations and reader donations rather than advertising. The outlet won the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting for its series on an Enbridge pipeline spill into Michigan's Kalamazoo River — a major credential for what was then a small digital outlet. In 2016 it was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for its 'Exxon: The Road Not Taken' investigation, which reported on internal ExxonMobil research about climate change that predated the public debate by decades. From a two-person Brooklyn operation, the newsroom has grown to more than 40 journalists working in regional bureaus across the United States as well as reporting posts in Europe and the Caribbean. Media monitors, including Media Bias/Fact Check and Ad Fontes Media, rate it as left-center in political orientation but high for factual accuracy and sourcing. Its editorial mission is explicitly centered on the risks of climate change and the erosion of environmental protections, which leads some critics to characterize its framing as advocacy; the outlet maintains a stated firewall between funders and editorial decisions.
