Background

Inside Higher Ed was founded in 2004 by journalists Scott Jaschik and Doug Lederman with backing from Washington, D.C.-area venture funds, aiming to offer free daily news about American higher education. The site grew into a leading trade outlet combining news, opinion, and one of the more widely used academic job boards in the country. In late 2014, Quad Partners—a New York private equity firm that also invested in for-profit colleges—acquired a controlling stake, which drew criticism from faculty unions and advocates who saw a conflict of interest given Quad's financial ties to the sector the outlet covers. Times Higher Education, a British rankings and media company, purchased Inside Higher Ed from Quad Partners in January 2022; THE itself had been acquired by UK private equity firm Inflexion in 2019, making IHE ultimately an asset of a London-based private equity portfolio. Media bias analysts at Media Bias/Fact Check rate it Left-Center, while AllSides rates it Lean Left, both citing its focus on equity and diversity issues and a relative absence of conservative viewpoints. Since January 2025, the outlet has provided extensive coverage of the Trump administration's higher-education agenda—funding freezes, anti-DEI executive orders, closure of TRIO programs, and mass international student visa revocations—consistently foregrounding the concerns of university officials, researchers, and advocacy groups challenging those policies.
