Background
International Business Times launched in 2006 as a digital-native business and financial news publication, co-founded by Etienne Uzac and Johnathan Davis. Despite no formal public connection, investigative reporting found that IBT Media operated within the organizational network of David Jang, a South Korean pastor whose followers also run Olivet University and several Christian media outlets; internal communications reportedly showed Jang directing editorial and business strategy. In 2013, IBT Media acquired the legacy print magazine Newsweek, and by 2017 rebranded the parent company as Newsweek Media Group. Newsweek was spun off as a separate entity in 2018 after a leadership dispute, and the two organizations subsequently sued each other over assets and governance. That same year, IBT Media was indicted in New York on charges tied to a $35 million scheme to defraud lenders; Uzac pleaded guilty in 2020 to money laundering and fraud in the second degree, receiving probation. Litigation between IBT Media and Newsweek over ownership claims remained unresolved as of late 2025. Third-party bias trackers rate IBT as mostly factual and center to left-center in story selection; the outlet received a Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) award for a 2017 investigation into tax-bill revisions that benefited Trump-linked interests.
