Background

Investopedia was founded in 1999 by Cory Wagner and Cory Janssen, two business students in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, as an online dictionary of investing and finance terms. Forbes Media acquired it in 2007, then sold it to digital-marketing firm ValueClick for $42 million in 2010. IAC purchased Investopedia along with several other web properties for $80 million in 2013. In 2018, IAC folded it into its Dotdash portfolio of reference and lifestyle sites, accompanying a round of staff cuts affecting roughly a third of employees. When Dotdash acquired the legacy magazine publisher Meredith Corporation in late 2021, the combined entity became Dotdash Meredith, and Investopedia remained one of its flagship brands. The site has grown to host roughly 40,000 articles and definitions and draws tens of millions of monthly visitors seeking explanations of financial products, market events, and economic policy. Media bias trackers — including Media Bias/Fact Check and AllSides — consistently rate it at or near the center with high factual accuracy, reflecting its dictionary-and-explainer mission rather than an opinion-journalism role. Editor-in-Chief Caleb Silver, a former CNN business news executive who joined in 2016, has emphasized financial literacy and plain-language explanations as the site's core purpose.
