Background

Army Times, the flagship publication, was founded in 1940 by Mel Ryder, who had earlier worked with the Kiplinger Agency and published a newspaper for Civilian Conservation Corps members. The company expanded over subsequent decades, adding Air Force Times (1947), Navy Times (1951), and Marine Corps Times (1999), eventually organizing under the Military Times brand to serve all military branches. Gannett Company acquired Army Times Publishing in 1997, and the publications operated under the Gannett Government Media umbrella. When Gannett split its print and broadcast operations in 2015, the military publications moved to the resulting TEGNA spinoff. In March 2016, TEGNA sold Sightline Media Group — the renamed publishing entity — to Regent, L.P., a California-based private equity firm; by 2019, Regent folded Sightline into its Archetype media portfolio. The outlet has a track record of editorial independence from the Pentagon: most prominently, in 2006 it published an editorial calling for the resignation of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. In October 2025, Military Times and its sister publication Defense News joined roughly 30 other outlets in surrendering their Pentagon press passes rather than accept new rules requiring reporters to seek pre-approval for coverage — rules the outlets said would 'punish reporters who ask legitimate questions.'
