Mountain Xpress
U.S. center-left (progressive alt-weekly, local Asheville focus)
Background
Jeff Fobes started the monthly eco-newspaper Green Line in 1987 as the newsletter of the WNC Greens. With investor Julian Price and about 250 small donors, he turned it into the weekly Mountain Xpress, which published its first issue on August 10, 1994. Price and a few anonymous backers supplied most of the capital, reportedly as gifts rather than loans. The paper remains independently owned, with Fobes as majority owner and publisher, and it has been a member of the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies. It is distributed free in print and online. As ad revenue fell, it added reader memberships, and a surge of donations followed COVID-19 and Tropical Storm Helene in 2024. Fobes has said a nonprofit structure would limit its ability to sell advertising. Its coverage centers on Asheville and Buncombe County government, development, housing, the environment, arts and elections. Its tone is progressive and community-oriented, in the alt-weekly tradition. In 2026 its local coverage included quotes from officials such as Mayor Esther Manheimer warning of Trump-administration threats to aid, alongside some quoted supportive voices. I did not find a recent national editorial position from the paper itself, so the administration stance reflects its overall orientation and what it publishes.
