NAHB was founded in 1942 as a federation of state and local home builder associations, originally formed to represent the residential construction industry during wartime housing pressures. It grew through the postwar housing boom and by the 2020s claimed more than 140,000 members organized through roughly 700 affiliated local and state associations. It operates as a 501(c)(6) tax-exempt trade association, meaning its stated purpose is advancing the common business interests of its members.
