Background

NBC Sports traces its origins to May 17, 1939, when NBC's experimental television station W2XBS broadcast an intercollegiate baseball game between Columbia and Princeton — generally considered the first televised sporting event in the United States. A formal NBC Sports division was created in April 1941 under announcer Bill Stern, and the unit became a standalone operating department by 1977. Over the following decades NBC Sports secured landmark broadcasting rights, including the first televised World Series (1947), the first NBA broadcast (1954), and live Olympic coverage starting in 1964. Comcast acquired majority control of NBCUniversal in January 2011, and that same year formed NBC Sports Group to consolidate NBC's national sports division with Comcast's regional sports networks. NBC Sports Network (NBCSN), a dedicated sports cable channel, was shut down at the end of 2021; its programming — including the NHL, NASCAR, and Premier League — migrated to the USA Network and the Peacock streaming service. In 2025, the NBA returned to NBC after a more than two-decade absence, a deal that significantly boosted advertising commitments. NBC Sports generated roughly $1.92 billion in advertising revenue in the first quarter of 2026 alone, driven by Super Bowl LX and the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. As a sports rights and production operation rather than a journalism outlet, NBC Sports has not been the subject of significant political-bias controversies; such debates within NBCUniversal have centered on NBC News, not the sports division.
