Background

The New York Times was founded on September 18, 1851, by journalist Henry Jarvis Raymond and banker George Jones as the New-York Daily Times. Adolph Ochs purchased the struggling paper in 1896, introduced the motto 'All the News That's Fit to Print,' and reoriented it toward comprehensive factual reporting. The Sulzberger family, descendants of Ochs, has maintained control ever since through a trust and Class B shares. Over the 20th century, the Times accumulated more than 130 Pulitzer Prizes and became widely regarded as a U.S. newspaper of record. Major editorial controversies include Moscow bureau chief Walter Duranty's Pulitzer Prize-winning Soviet coverage in the 1920s–30s, which denied widespread famine and the Holodomor and was later widely condemned; Judith Miller's 2002–2003 reporting on alleged Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, which proved unfounded and was linked to the case for war; and reporter Jayson Blair's fabrication of dozens of articles, uncovered in 2003 and triggering the resignations of executive editor Howell Raines and managing editor Gerald Boyd. The paper launched its digital subscription model in 2011 and by 2025 derived the majority of its revenue from roughly 12.8 million digital subscribers. Independent media bias trackers (AllSides, Media Bias/Fact Check) consistently rate its news coverage as lean-left, with its opinion section rated more firmly left.
